A Photographers Paradise
Zambia is a land of untamed beauty and breathtaking contrast, making it a dream destination for photographers. From the golden plains of South Luangwa to the meandering channels of the Lower Zambezi, every corner of this country offers something extraordinary to capture. Zambia is home to some of Africa’s most iconic wildlife — lions, elephants, leopards, giraffes, hippos, hundreds of species of birds, all thriving in vast, unspoiled wilderness. Whether you're tracking big cats on a game drive or photographing elephants reaching up for Winterthorn branches, you'll find endless inspiration in the raw, wild heart of Africa.
South Luangwa
South Luangwa National Park is one of Africa’s most rewarding and untouched photographic destinations. Known for its rich biodiversity and raw, unfiltered beauty, this remote corner of Zambia offers dramatic scenes at every turn — from herds of elephants crossing the Luangwa River to leopards draped across branches at sunset. The park’s ever-changing light, lush riverine landscapes, and wide open plains create a natural studio unlike any other. Whether you're capturing the intensity of a predator's gaze or the quiet elegance of a giraffe silhouetted against a fiery sky, South Luangwa invites you to slow down, observe, and photograph Africa at its most wild and authentic.
Lower Zambezi
The Lower Zambezi is a landscape of striking contrasts and quiet drama — a place where the wide, slow-moving river mirrors the sky, and wildlife drifts between water and land with effortless grace. Here, elephants cross channels in the early morning mist, fish eagles call from high perches, and the light dances off the water in golden waves. It’s a photographer’s dream: tranquil, untamed, and full of fleeting moments that beg to be captured. Whether from a canoe, a boat, or on foot along the riverbanks, the Lower Zambezi offers an ever-changing canvas where nature reveals its most intimate and powerful scenes.
The dream shot
The quintessential shot to get in the Lower Zambezi is elephants reaching up for Winterthorn branches and pods, which they love. My chosen timing of August was intentional as the lowest leaves have already been eaten earlier in the season, forcing the big bulls to get on their back legs to reach the lowest leaves. That's the shot we hope to get!
Accomodations and Experience
The accommodations are beautiful, as long as you don’t mind occasionally being kept up by some very vocal wildlife! I like to think of it as part of the experience, how often do you get to say your elephant neighbours were a little inconsiderate.
Chikunto Camp - South Luangwa
Chikunto Safari Lodge sits on a peninsula of land in Zambia's South Luangwa National Park created by the meandering Luangwa River. A traditional yet stylish property, with quick and easy access to the wildlife-rich and remote northern section of the park.
Chula Camp - Lower Zambezi
Chula Island Camp is a stunning tented camp with all the luxuries one could wish for, but with the charm and ethos of a true seasonal bush-camp. With just 5 guest tents, catering for no more than 10 people in camp at once - each tent is carefully and expertly located for the best possible views across the Zambezi River.
Kutali Camp - Lower Zambezi
A main area stretch-canvas tent set beneath the towering Winterthorn trees makes for an exceptional location for meals, reading, charging cameras and wildlife watching.
Seasonal Camps
The two camps we’ll be staying at in lower Zambezi are seasonal, taken down annually for the harsh conditions of rainy season, and reestablished for tourist season - meaning they’re a little more rustic. Don’t let that fool you, the accommodations are beautiful. Porcelain sinks, flushable toilets, and hot bucket showers. Just ask the staff and they’ll be happy to fill up your bucket shower with your choice of temperature. They don’t just run for a couple minutes either! They run for closer to 15.
Incredible Food
The food I had in my time in Zambia was genuinely some of the best food I’ve had in my life. To say I was impressed is quite the understatement, I’d go again just for the food! The incredible chefs are also happy to accomodate any dietary restrictions.
Big Cats
Zambia offers some of the most thrilling and intimate encounters with big cats anywhere in Africa. In the golden light of early morning or just before dusk, you might find a leopard draped elegantly over a tree branch, eyes locked onto its next move — a scene of pure drama waiting to be captured. Lions roam the plains in powerful prides, their presence commanding, their movements photogenic from every angle.
For the bird enthusiasts
My photography journey began with birds. Zambia’s skies and waterways are alive with hundreds of species, each more stunning than the last. From the regal African fish eagle to the vibrant kingfisher, capturing their beauty and motion has always inspired me. Photographing birds here is a rewarding challenge that brings me closer to the wild, and it’s where my passion truly took flight.
